Nigeria on Friday, January 22, 2021, recorded 2,314 cases of the novel coronavirus, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in a Saturday tweet.
It is the first time the NCDC has reported over 2,000 cases in one day since it started tracking infections last February.
Earlier on Saturday, the NCDC had put the figure at 1,483, noting that the data for Lagos, the country’s epicenter for the virus, was not included.
In its update on Saturday, the NCDC said Lagos had recorded 831 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, pushing the daily figure past the 2,000-mark.
An update in the toll figure also saw the number of deaths rise from four to 12.
Till date, 118,969 cases have now been confirmed in the nation’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
While 94,877 of those cases have been discharged, 1,497 deaths have been recorded.
Trailing behind the number of new cases was Kaduna, which reported 545 infections.
Other regions with new cases include FCT (235), Plateau (127), Nasarawa (80), Oyo (72), Delta (65), Rivers (64), Kano (46), Ogun (46), Bayelsa (30), Gombe (30), Abia (28), Osun (27), Edo (25), Ondo (14), Sokoto (12), Zamfara (10), Bauchi (8), Imo (5), Jigawa, Ekiti and Borno recorded 4 cases each and Niger (2).
