Popular Anambra-based cleric, Chukwuemeka “Odumeje” Ohanaemere, has alleged that individuals publicly defending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his administration have been “bribed.”
Speaking in a video circulating on social media on Thursday, the controversial preacher criticised the President’s recent comments on hunger in Nigeria, accusing political leaders of placing personal and family interests above the welfare of citizens.
Odumeje argued that elected officials are merely custodians of the country’s resources and should manage them for the benefit of all Nigerians rather than for personal gain.
“Anyone you see singing praises for the current government is doing so because that person has been bribed. Whether you came into government through election or by force, you are there to manage our resources, not your personal business or your family’s business,” he said.
The cleric also condemned political officeholders, including governors and senators, for defending Tinubu’s remark that hunger existed in Nigeria long before he was born.
According to him, the 2027 general elections will provide Nigerians with an opportunity to determine whether the country’s resources should continue to serve a privileged few or benefit the wider population.
“In 2027, we shall decide whether Nigeria belongs to governors, senators and their families, or to all of us. We are no longer boys; we are fathers,” he said.
Odumeje accused some politicians of supporting the President solely to protect their personal interests, alleging that many focus on accumulating wealth before leaving office while abandoning the citizens they were elected to serve.
He maintained that public office should be about service and praised leaders who openly acknowledge the country’s challenges instead of shifting responsibility to previous administrations or political opponents.
“If you have nothing to offer the citizens of this country, then let us divide this thing we call a country. The resources the President manages do not belong to him; they belong to every Nigerian,” he stated.
The cleric also criticised the Federal Government’s borrowing, calling for greater transparency and accountability in the management of public debt.
According to him, loans obtained by the government are incurred in the name of Nigerians and will ultimately be repaid by both present and future generations.
“The money you borrow is borrowed in all our names. You must account for it because that debt rests on all of us and on the future of our children,” Odumeje said.
