Grok Responds to Claims Tinubu’s Independence Day Broadcast Was AI-Generated

Grok, the artificial intelligence chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, has responded to claims that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2026 Independence Day broadcast was generated using artificial intelligence.

Tinubu delivered his Independence Day address to Nigerians on Thursday, October 1, as the country marked its 66th anniversary of independence. In the broadcast, titled “From Reform to Prosperity,” the President said Nigeria had moved beyond the most difficult phase of his administration’s economic reforms and that the country was entering an era of prosperity.

The address, which was broadcast across major television stations, focused on the government’s economic reforms, the cost of living, job creation, industrial growth and the need for sustained economic development.

However, the broadcast sparked reactions on social media, with some users alleging that artificial intelligence had been used in producing or editing the President’s appearance.

An X account identified as iOccupyNigeria claimed that the broadcast was AI-generated, alleging that Tinubu’s lip movements did not appear to synchronise properly with his words.

Responding to an enquiry from an X user, Grok said there was no clear indication that the video had been generated by artificial intelligence.

Grok noted that modern AI-generated videos can be difficult to distinguish from authentic footage through visual inspection alone, making definitive conclusions challenging.

According to Grok, the footage appeared to be an authentic recording of Tinubu delivering his Independence Day address from the Presidential Villa. It pointed to the video’s consistency with the full speech published by multiple Nigerian media organisations, its official branding, the President’s natural movements throughout the lengthy broadcast and its publication on his verified account.

The State House and the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation also published the full text of Tinubu’s address on their official platforms.

Grok therefore concluded that it found “no signs of AI generation” in the broadcast, while acknowledging that visual analysis alone cannot provide absolute certainty when assessing sophisticated AI-generated media.
