Amaechi: Tinubu Presidency Is ‘Choice of Death’, Atiku Represents Life

The Vice-Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rotimi Amaechi, has described the 2027 presidential election as a choice between what he called “life” under Atiku Abubakar and “death” under President Bola Tinubu.

Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State, made the remarks on Friday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he criticised the Tinubu administration over the rising cost of living and the impact of its economic policies on Nigerians.

The ADC candidate urged Nigerians to support Atiku, the party’s presidential candidate, arguing that the former vice president represents “life.”

“We don’t have two choices but just one to make: the choice to be alive, because Tinubu’s presidency is the choice of death,” Amaechi said.

He cited rising transportation costs, house rents, taxes and the increasing cost of medication as some of the challenges facing Nigerians.

According to him, some workers earning the N70,000 minimum wage spend almost their entire monthly income on transportation.

“My wife has staff in her shop, and they are asking for a salary increase. The transport fare from where they stay alone, out of the N70,000 you pay them in a month, takes N65,000,” he said.

Amaechi also claimed that house rents had increased significantly in some areas, while questioning the impact of taxes on workers’ take-home pay.

“So, the government increases your salary to N70,000 and introduces taxes that take away over 60 to 70 percent. Is the money in your pocket?” he asked.

He further criticised the rising cost of drugs, arguing that many Nigerians are struggling to afford essential medication.

“Will you vote for Tinubu, who has taken away the money from your pocket? What about the cost of drugs? How many people have died because they can’t afford drugs?” Amaechi asked.

He concluded by reiterating his argument that Nigerians have only one choice to make in the 2027 election.

“So, when you say they have a choice, they don’t. It’s only one choice, which is life, and Atiku represents life,” he said.

Amaechi’s comments come as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with the ADC positioning Atiku and Amaechi as its presidential and vice-presidential candidates. The party formally announced Amaechi as Atiku’s running mate in June.
