Businessman and political commentator Isaac Fayose has predicted a comfortable victory for the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the Federal Capital Territory during the 2027 general election.
Speaking on News Central TV on Tuesday, Fayose pushed back against recent remarks by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who had claimed the opposition holds little sway in Abuja. Wike, in an earlier interview, described the 2027 contest as a straightforward one, predicting that President Bola Tinubu would carry both Rivers State and the FCT.
Fayose rejected that assessment outright. “Abuja is NDC, Abuja is Peter Obi,” he declared, insisting the capital’s political loyalties tell a different story than the one painted by the ruling party.
The commentator went further, suggesting the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has no legitimate path to victory in the territory, alleging that manipulation of results would be its only option. He maintained, however, that the NDC has begun preparing countermeasures to guard against any attempt to compromise the outcome.
“People are ready to vote,” Fayose said, adding that the party’s main concern was identifying new tactics that might be used to suppress turnout among its supporters. He urged Nigerians to test public sentiment informally, noting that street-level conversations would reveal where loyalties truly lie.
Drawing a comparison with electoral practices abroad, Fayose called for the introduction of pre-election mock polls in Nigeria, a tool he said is commonly used elsewhere to gauge voter opinion ahead of official contests but remains absent from the country’s electoral culture.
