The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has disclosed that his own children voted for Labour Party’s Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election, attributing their choice to backlash over the All Progressives Congress’ Muslim-Muslim ticket at the time.
Speaking in a Monday interview on TVC News, the former Rivers State governor said the controversy surrounding President Bola Tinubu and running mate Kashim Shettima’s shared-faith ticket had driven many voters, including members of his own family, toward Obi’s candidacy.
“In 2023, there was a problem with the Muslim-Muslim ticket. There was this campaign about Christianity,” Wike said, adding that all his children supported Obi at the time but have since changed their view of him.
He argued that concerns over the ticket have since faded under the current administration. “Tinubu has been able to kill the Muslim-Muslim ticket problem,” he said, suggesting that voters swayed by religious considerations in 2023 no longer see it as an issue.
Wike also dismissed the prospects of Obi, now the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), in the 2027 election, insisting he cannot win.
