NLC-Declares-Two-Day-Warning-Strike-Over-Petrol-Subsidy-Removal

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared a two-day warning strike, which will begin on Tuesday, September 5, in protest of the Federal Government’s failure to solve the difficulties caused by the elimination of gasoline subsidies.

The announcement was made by NLC President Joe Ajaero on Friday during a news conference at the Labour House in Abuja while addressing resolutions passed by the NLC National Executive Committee (NEC) the day before.

The labor union accuses the federal government of abandoning the talks and failing to follow some of the resolutions reached at prior meetings with the government.

On August 2, organized labor protested what it called the administration of President Bola Tinubu’s anti-people policies.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and their associate unions demonstrated in Lagos, Abia, Plateau, Kaduna, Kano, Rivers, Zamfara, Katsina, Cross River, Ebonyi, Enugu, Kwara, Ogun, Imo, Ondo, and Edo, among other states.

The protest followed a seven-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government demanding “the immediate reversal of all federal government anti-poor policies, including the recent hike in PMS (Premium Motor Spirit) price, increase in public school fees, and the release of the eight months withheld salary of university lecturers and workers.”

The union also asked for an increase in the minimum salary from N30,000 to N200,000, claiming that Nigerians’ peace of mind has been eroded since the President’s “subsidy is gone” inauguration speech on May 29, 2023.

Several meetings between the Presidency and unions on palliatives for Nigerians enduring hardship as a result of the elimination of petrol subsidies proved fruitless.
