The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, formerly known as the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, has declared a total and comprehensive strike with immediate effect.
The decision was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the chairperson of the union, Terseer Abari, following a congress held on August 12, 2026.
Abari appealed to the relevant authorities to settle all outstanding salaries owed to members of the union to pave the way for the resumption of academic activities.
According to ASUU, the university management has paid only two of the four components contained in the 2025 agreement reached between the Federal Government and the union.
The union said the Consolidated Academic Staff Salaries and Earned Academic Allowance components had been paid, while the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and Professorial Allowance remained largely unpaid.
“While the university has paid the Consolidated Academic Staff Salaries and the Earned Academic Allowance components, the remaining two components, Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and Professorial Allowance, were only paid in January and February 2026,” the statement said.
ASUU further disclosed that only 39 per cent of the CATA for March 2026 had been paid, describing the situation as an underpayment of members’ salaries.
The union therefore called for the immediate payment of all outstanding entitlements, stressing that the strike would remain in effect until the issues were addressed.
