Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has called for the arrest and prosecution of former military Head of State, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, over alleged crimes committed during his administration.
Sowore made the call in a post on his verified X handle on Thursday, as Babangida marked his 85th birthday.
The human rights activist argued that Babangida’s age should not shield him from accountability for alleged human rights abuses, killings, corruption and other violations associated with his regime.
Sowore cited the case of former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, who faced arrest and extensive legal proceedings in his 80s, as an example that advanced age does not automatically place former leaders beyond the reach of justice.
“It is not too late to arrest and prosecute IBB. He is 85. His age should not confer immunity from justice,” Sowore said.
He added that the unresolved killings, abuses, corruption and other alleged grave violations linked to Babangida’s regime should be properly investigated and prosecuted where sufficient evidence exists.
