Parents of pupils at the Federal Government College (FGC) Staff School, Sokoto, have called for an upward review of teachers’ salaries, urging the school management to implement a minimum monthly salary of N100,000 alongside a N30,000 lesson allowance.
The demand was made during the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on Sunday, where parents expressed concern over the welfare of teachers, noting that some staff members have served for nearly two decades while earning what they described as inadequate salaries.
Speaking at the meeting, PTA Chairman, Jamilu Sidi, said improving teachers’ welfare would boost morale, enhance productivity, and help maintain quality education in the school.
He warned that poor remuneration could negatively affect teachers’ performance and ultimately impact pupils’ academic outcomes.
According to Sidi, teachers’ salaries have only increased from N55,000 to N60,000, despite repeated engagements with the school management over staff welfare.
“Concerns over poor teachers’ welfare, limited transparency in the school’s finances, and repeated increases in school fees remain unresolved despite engagements with the management. Teachers’ salaries have only increased from N55,000 to N60,000,” he said.
The PTA also called for greater transparency in decisions affecting the school, particularly regarding fee increments, and urged the management to improve stakeholder engagement.
In addition, parents appealed for the rehabilitation of damaged roads within the school premises and stronger collaboration between the PTA and the school management to create a more conducive learning environment.
Responding, the Headteacher, Chivuzor David, thanked parents for their continued support and disclosed that the school had resolved its water supply challenges through the installation of a solar-powered borehole.
He further appealed to the PTA to support the provision of a solar power system for the nursery section to enhance teaching and learning.
Chairman of the School Board, Sulaiman Ibrahim, assured parents that all resolutions reached during the meeting would be presented to the school management for consideration and appropriate action.
