Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd), has appealed to Nigerians to support the nation’s security forces, stressing that military personnel are not enemies of the state but fellow victims of the country’s security challenges.
Speaking at the June 12, 2026 edition of The Platform, aired on Channels Television on Friday, Musa said members of the armed forces continue to make enormous sacrifices in the fight against insecurity and deserve the support and appreciation of citizens.
“The security forces are not the enemies of the state. In fact, what I always say is that we are all victims,” he said.
The Defence Minister recalled his experience as Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, where he served for 19 months in the North-East theatre of operations, describing the emotional burden of informing families about the deaths of military personnel.
“As a commander, one of the most painful experiences is meeting the families of soldiers who have been killed and explaining to them what happened to their loved ones,” he said.
Musa also highlighted the plight of personnel who have suffered life-altering injuries in the line of duty, including amputations caused by Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
He noted that the sacrifices made by security operatives underscore the need for greater national unity and cooperation in tackling insecurity.
The Defence Minister urged Nigerians to work closely with government institutions and security agencies, emphasizing that lasting success against criminal elements can only be achieved through collective effort.
“We have a country to protect. We must honour them, support them, and give them everything that will keep them going. Together, with the support of citizens, so much can be achieved,” Musa stated.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the military and other security agencies to safeguarding the country, while calling on citizens to play their part by providing support, cooperation, and credible information to security authorities.
