Police officers on Friday fired tear gas at protesters in Abuja as citizens took to the streets to demonstrate against worsening economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and the rising cost of living across the country.
The protest coincided with Nigeria’s 27th anniversary of uninterrupted democratic governance, with demonstrators calling on the Federal Government to urgently address the challenges affecting millions of Nigerians.
The protesters, who marched through parts of the Federal Capital Territory, expressed frustration over the country’s deteriorating security situation and the increasing difficulty of meeting basic living expenses.
Recent incidents of insecurity have heightened public concerns, including the reported abduction of schoolchildren in Oyo State and the kidnapping of teachers in Borno State. These developments have further fueled calls for stronger government action to protect lives and property.
Many Nigerians also continue to grapple with soaring food prices, inflation, and economic pressures, making it increasingly difficult for families to afford basic necessities.
As tensions rose during the demonstration, security operatives deployed tear gas in an effort to disperse the crowd, leading to moments of chaos among the protesters.
