ABUJA, Nigeria — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has described June 12 as one of the most defining moments in Nigeria’s political history, saying the day symbolizes the enduring democratic aspirations of the Nigerian people and serves as a reminder that government derives its legitimacy from the citizens.
In a Democracy Day statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said June 12 represents the collective belief that the voices of Nigerians matter and that democratic governance must remain accountable to the people.
“June 12 remains one of the most important dates in our nation’s political history and a reminder that government derives legitimacy from the governed,” Abdullahi stated.
While congratulating Nigerians on the occasion of Democracy Day, the ADC stressed that the anniversary should go beyond commemorating past struggles and victories, urging leaders and citizens alike to reflect on the state of the nation’s democracy.
According to the party, the true measure of democracy is not the number of years spent under civilian rule, but the extent to which citizens enjoy improved welfare, greater freedoms and expanded opportunities.
The ADC expressed concern over the country’s persistent security challenges, worsening economic conditions and declining public confidence in institutions, warning that these issues continue to undermine democratic progress.
Abdullahi noted that soaring costs of food, transportation, healthcare, housing and education have placed severe pressure on families and businesses across the country.
“Our young people should be driving national growth and renewal, but many are struggling to find opportunities and hope within the country,” he said.
The opposition party rejected suggestions that insecurity, poverty and economic hardship are unavoidable realities, insisting that effective leadership and sound governance can reverse the trend.
“We believe security must be intelligence-led, technology-enabled, community-informed and locally responsive if Nigeria is to achieve lasting peace,” Abdullahi added.
The ADC further outlined its vision for Nigeria, emphasizing economic reforms aimed at reducing the cost of living, supporting businesses and improving citizens’ standard of living.
The party also pledged commitment to transparency, accountability, food security and institutional reforms designed to restore public trust in governance.
“We believe government must once again be judged by results, not speeches, excuses or headlines, but by the wellbeing of Nigerians,” the ADC spokesman said.
The party called on Nigerians to remain committed to the ideals of democracy and work collectively towards building a more secure, prosperous and accountable nation.
