Anambra N100m Transfer Sparks Uproar as Police Confirm Reversal

0

There is growing public concern in Anambra State following reports of an alleged transfer of N100 million from a state government account into the bank account of Victor Egbetokun, said to be the son of former Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

According to investigative platform Sahara Reporters, the sum was reportedly paid in four tranches of N25 million each.

Reacting during a live television interview, the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, acknowledged the development, stating that the former IGP’s son confirmed receipt of the funds. Hundeyin explained that the recipient was advised to contact his account officer to reverse the transaction, which was subsequently done.

Despite the reported reversal, the incident has triggered widespread reactions among residents of Anambra State, with many questioning the management of public funds under Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

A public affairs analyst and critic of the state government, Kingsley Ubani, raised concerns over how such a transaction could occur. He queried who authorised the transfer and why it was not immediately detected internally.

“Out of the 36 states of the federation, it had to be Anambra State — a state managed by an acclaimed Professor of Economics — that N100 million would ‘miss road,’” Ubani said. He added that residents deserve clarity on the circumstances surrounding the transaction and safeguards in place to prevent similar occurrences.

Another resident, Peter Ndukaike, expressed worry over what he described as the state government’s silence since the issue surfaced publicly. According to him, the absence of an official statement has fueled suspicion and uncertainty among citizens.

Journalist Fisayo Soyombo also weighed in on the controversy in a Facebook post, questioning how an alleged erroneous transfer of such magnitude could end up in the account of a close relative of Nigeria’s top internal security official.

In response to the allegations, the Press Secretary to the governor, Christian Aburime, denied that the Anambra State Government was responsible for the transfer. He described the incident as an “honest error” that occurred months ago and had already been resolved.

Aburime maintained that the state government had no involvement in the transaction and emphasized Governor Soludo’s reputation for fiscal discipline. He insisted the matter had been settled following the reversal of the funds and should not be politicised.

The controversy, however, continues to generate debate across the state, with many calling for greater transparency and a clearer explanation of how the transfer occurred and the measures being taken to strengthen financial oversight mechanisms.
