Makoko Demolitions: Coalition Urges Lagos to Stay the Course on Safety Enforcement

The Convener of the Coalition for Good Governance in Lagos, Nelson Ekujumi, has urged the Lagos State Government to continue the removal of structures built beneath high-tension power lines in Makoko, describing the exercise as a necessary step to protect lives and property.

Addressing journalists in Lagos on Wednesday, Ekujumi warned against any reversal of the demolition exercise, stressing that the clearance of illegal structures is a critical public safety intervention rather than a punitive measure.

He noted that Makoko has long posed significant urban planning and environmental challenges, citing decades of congestion and unregulated development within the waterfront community. According to him, many residents live in makeshift wooden structures erected over the lagoon, with limited access to essential services such as sanitation, potable water, electricity and effective waste disposal systems.

Ekujumi expressed concern over the continued construction of buildings beneath power transmission infrastructure, stating that such practices, coupled with frequent flooding and recurring fire outbreaks, heighten the risk of disaster.

“Safeguarding human lives must remain the foremost responsibility of any responsible government,” he said.

While acknowledging that the demolition exercise has disrupted livelihoods and caused hardship for affected residents, the coalition cautioned against treating the matter solely from an emotional standpoint. It warned that ignoring evident safety violations could lead to catastrophic consequences.

The group also called for improved communication and transparency between government agencies and community members to foster trust and reduce tensions during similar interventions.

Commending the Lagos State House of Assembly for intervening to prevent a breakdown of law and order, the coalition urged the legislature to ensure its committee acts promptly and decisively.

Beyond enforcement, the coalition advocated a comprehensive redevelopment strategy for Makoko. It recommended the provision of decent housing, basic infrastructure and economic support for displaced residents as part of a coordinated urban renewal plan.

The Lagos State Government had earlier commenced the demolition of structures under high-tension power lines after issuing notices to residents. Authorities maintained that the action followed non-compliance with agreed safety standards and was undertaken in the interest of public safety.

The coalition maintained that sustainable renewal in Makoko must strike a balance between strict enforcement of regulations and structured development planning that prioritises safety while protecting livelihoods.
