Brazilian football legend Roberto Carlos has expressed confidence that Cristiano Ronaldo will eventually reach the 1,000-goal milestone but insists that Pelé remains the only player to have achieved the feat in football history.
Speaking to Portuguese outlet O Jogo, Carlos praised Ronaldo’s longevity and relentless pursuit of records, noting that while the Portuguese forward is closing in on the landmark, Pelé’s accomplishment should not be overlooked.
“For those who love Cristiano and football, it’s great to see him keep making history and breaking records,” Carlos said, as quoted by World Soccer Talk. “The only player who ever scored 1,000 goals was Pelé, but Cristiano might be able to join that group. I see him looking happy and confident in the Saudi league.”
Ronaldo currently sits on 961 career goals and is widely expected to continue adding to his tally despite missing Al-Nassr’s last three matches. Carlos expressed certainty that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner will eventually reach the milestone.
“I’m absolutely certain he’ll get there,” the former Real Madrid defender added. “He rarely gets injured, he keeps performing at a high level, he sets a great example, and Portugal should be proud of him.”
Carlos also encouraged Ronaldo to prolong his career, suggesting the 39-year-old still has much to offer the game.
“Cristiano should never stop playing,” he said. “Even if he could only use one leg, he would still inspire young players. He gives strength and energy to every boy who dreams of playing football.”
As Ronaldo edges closer to the historic mark, the debate over football’s all-time scoring records continues — with Pelé’s legacy and Ronaldo’s pursuit both firmly in the spotlight.
