Abuja — The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged party members to exercise restraint, respect the rule of law, and comply with court rulings on the party’s leadership amid lingering internal crises.
The BoT Chairman, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, gave the charge on Monday in Abuja during the party’s 85th BoT meeting, describing the moment as a defining period for the opposition party.
Ohuabunwa openly threw his support behind the Mohammed Abdulrahman-led National Caretaker Committee, a faction widely regarded as loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. He said the elders of the party must serve as stabilizing forces following months of turbulence.
Defending the delay in the conduct of party congresses, the BoT chairman said the decision was deliberate and necessary to protect the PDP’s legal standing. According to him, the pause was not an abdication of responsibility but an act of institutional caution in deference to ongoing judicial processes.
He stressed that the party would ultimately be judged favourably for choosing legality over haste, patience over provocation, and respect for the judiciary over political expediency.
A major highlight of the meeting was the BoT’s acknowledgment of what it described as judicial clarity on the PDP leadership crisis. Senator Ohuabunwa cited a recent Federal High Court judgment in Ibadan, which affirmed the legitimacy of the Abdulrahman-led National Caretaker Committee.
He urged party leaders and members to respect the court’s decision, warning that continued infighting poses a serious threat to the PDP’s survival. According to him, political parties often collapse not because of the strength of their opponents but due to internal decay and lack of discipline.
“Unity is not just a slogan; it is a strategic necessity,” he warned.
Speaking at the meeting, National Chairman of the Caretaker Committee, Hon. Mohammed Abdulrahman, thanked the BoT for its support and reiterated the legal backing of his leadership, referencing the declaratory judgment of the Ibadan High Court.
He said the committee was moving past legal battles into active reorganization, announcing that a timetable for outstanding state congresses would be released soon to pave the way for a seamless National Convention.
Abdulrahman added that the committee remains committed to restoring stability and repositioning the PDP ahead of future electoral contests.
