Ronaldo Breaks World Record as Portugal Held 2-2 by Hungary in World Cup Qualifier Thriller

Cristiano Ronaldo tests positive for COVID-19

Portugal captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, etched his name deeper into football history on Tuesday after scoring twice in a 2-2 draw against Hungary during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The match began with a shocker as Attila Szalai stunned the Lisbon crowd by heading home Hungary’s opener. But Ronaldo, ever the talisman, turned the tide — converting two fine crosses from full-backs Nelson Semedo and Nuno Mendes to put Portugal in front.

Portugal’s dominance nearly yielded more goals, but Bruno Fernandes and Ruben Dias were both denied by the woodwork. Late drama struck when Dominik Szoboszlai equalized, earning Hungary a valuable point on the road.

The draw leaves Hungary five points behind Portugal at the top of the qualifying table.

Ronaldo’s brace not only salvaged a result for his team but also made history — taking his tally to 41 goals in 50 World Cup qualifier appearances, surpassing Carlos Ruiz of Guatemala to become the all-time top scorer in World Cup qualifying history.
