Abuja Erupts in Protest as Demonstrators Demand Rescue of Abducted Oyo Schoolchildren

Hundreds of protesters on Thursday took to the streets of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), demanding the immediate rescue of schoolchildren and teachers abducted by gunmen in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The demonstrators, who gathered in large numbers, marched through parts of the city chanting slogans such as “Tinubu Must Go,” “Rescue Them or Resign,” and “Bring Back Nigerian Children.”

During the protest, participants insisted that peaceful assembly and demonstration remain fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution, urging police officers deployed to the scene to cooperate with them.

In a video circulating online, one of the protesters was seen addressing a motorist, saying: “Oga, Tinubu must go. You can see what is happening today. You people are also part of it. Take this video and share it. Go and tell people that you witnessed this.”

The protest comes amid growing public outrage over the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, an incident that has heightened concerns about insecurity and the safety of students across the country.

Meanwhile, Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has alleged that he knows the politicians behind the abduction, although he did not provide evidence publicly to support the claim.

The demonstration also follows a nationwide protest staged on Monday by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), which called on the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the release of the victims and improve security in schools.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities had yet to provide an update on the rescue operation or the whereabouts of the abducted students and teachers.
