PORT HARCOURT — Supporters of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, who had thronged the Government House to welcome him back after a six-month suspension, were left disappointed on Thursday as the governor failed to appear.
Thousands of loyalists, including his deputy, Ngozi Odu’s supporters, former local government chairmen, and other political heavyweights, had gathered as early as 6:00 a.m., expecting a grand return.
Their hopes, however, dimmed as Fubara’s whereabouts remained unknown hours after the crowd had assembled, forcing many to disperse.
Fubara and his deputy had been out of office for six months following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers, citing deepening political tensions.
The emergency rule was lifted on Wednesday, with Tinubu directing the governor, his deputy, and members of the state House of Assembly to resume their duties.
Barely 24 hours after the directive, Assembly members reconvened for their first plenary, but the governor’s anticipated appearance at the Government House did not materialize, leaving supporters puzzled.
