The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains Nigeria’s leading opposition force and the only political party effectively challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Wike made the assertion on Monday while congratulating President Bola Tinubu and the APC on their victories in the recently concluded bye-elections held across the country.
The former Rivers State governor spoke during the commissioning of the Water Supply Network to Karu Satellite Town, one of the projects inaugurated to commemorate President Tinubu’s third anniversary in office.
While acknowledging the APC’s success at the polls, Wike maintained that the PDP has retained its status as the foremost opposition party in Nigeria.
“Let me use this opportunity to congratulate your party for winning Saturday’s bye-elections and also congratulate my party for maintaining its position as the opposition,” he said.
According to the FCT minister, democracy thrives when there is a strong ruling party and a credible opposition capable of holding the government accountable.
“In every political setting, there must be winners and an opposition. Today, we have seen the ruling party and the opposition party,” Wike stated.
He further argued that opposition politics goes beyond criticism, insisting that the PDP remains the only party actively providing a meaningful challenge to the APC-led administration.
“The opposition is not about talking but about challenging the ruling party, and we are the only party challenging the ruling party. Therefore, we are the leading opposition party,” he added.
Wike’s remarks come amid ongoing political realignments and growing discussions about the strength of opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
