ABUJA — The Federal Government has confirmed the closure of 13,597,057 social media accounts across major platforms, including TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X, for offensive content and violations of Nigeria’s Code of Practice 2024.
The disclosure was made in the latest Code of Practice 2024 Compliance Report, jointly issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
According to a statement released on Wednesday by NITDA spokesperson, Hadiza Umar, the report highlighted sweeping enforcement actions by global tech giants such as Google, Microsoft, and TikTok to curb harmful online activities.
The report revealed that a staggering 58,909,112 offensive contents were taken down, while 754,629 registered complaints were received from Nigerian users. Out of these, 420,439 pieces of content were removed and later reinstated following user appeals.
“The compliance reports provide valuable insights into the platforms’ efforts to address user safety concerns in line with the Code of Practice and their community guidelines,” Umar said.
She added that the move underscores Nigeria’s commitment to ensuring a safer online space:
“The submission of these reports marks a significant step towards fostering a safer and responsible digital environment for Nigerian users. We remain committed to working with industry players, civil society, and regulatory partners to strengthen user safety measures, enhance digital literacy, and promote trust and transparency in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.”
The government commended Google, Microsoft, and TikTok for their sustained compliance with the code and vowed to intensify collaboration with digital stakeholders to tackle online harm.
