ABUJA — Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has criticized the idea of rotational presidency in Nigeria, arguing that the country’s priority should be good governance, not regional politics.
Speaking during an appearance on Sunrise Daily, a breakfast programme on Channels Television, on Tuesday, Sowore said what Nigerians truly desire is a competent leader — regardless of where they come from.
“If I have a good President in Nigeria who can run this country very well, I don’t care where he comes from,” Sowore declared.
He maintained that the core idea of Nigeria’s federal system should be the promotion of equal opportunity for all, not entrenching regional or ethnic considerations in leadership selection.
“That is what the majority of the Nigerian people are aspiring for. That is the idea of this federation — that all the federating units should be able to have an opportunity,” he said.
Sowore stressed that every Nigerian, regardless of their region, should have the chance to contest for the highest office in the land based on merit, vision, and competence, rather than relying on zoning arrangements.
His comments come amid ongoing national debates over power rotation ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
