The United Nations has joined the global community in mourning the death of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in London at the age of 82 after a brief illness.

In an official statement released by his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the former Nigerian leader, describing him as a committed statesman who played a vital role in both national development and regional stability.

“During his tenure, President Buhari demonstrated a deep commitment to the sovereignty, stability, and development of his country,” Guterres said. “He also played a key role in promoting regional peace and security in West Africa and the Lake Chad Basin.”

The Secretary-General praised Buhari’s dedication to multilateralism, regional cooperation, and anti-corruption efforts, noting that his leadership elevated Nigeria’s profile within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and beyond.

Buhari, who once ruled Nigeria as a military leader before returning as a democratically elected president in 2015, was widely respected for his firm stance against corruption and his advocacy for multinational approaches to counterterrorism.

In a further show of solidarity, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed personally visited Nigeria House in New York to sign the condolence register. Mohammed, who served as Nigeria’s Minister of Environment during Buhari’s administration, offered heartfelt prayers and tributes.

“He was a true patriot who believed in his country, believed in his people, and did the best that he could,” she said. “His unwavering discipline, deep conviction, and steadfast patriotism will remain an enduring part of his legacy.”

Mohammed also commended Buhari’s firm representation of African interests on the global stage, particularly in areas such as climate change, security, and economic justice.

The UN’s tribute underscores the far-reaching impact of Buhari’s leadership, both within Nigeria and across the African continent.
