Peter Obi Backs ADC for 2027

Presidential hopeful and former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has thrown his weight behind the adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the political platform for the 2027 general elections, describing the decision as “difficult but necessary” for Nigeria’s future.

In a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday, Obi revealed that the move followed extensive deliberations among members of a growing opposition coalition committed to national transformation.

“Yesterday, the coalition members formally adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 Nigeria General Elections with Distinguished Senator David Mark serving as the National Chairman and H.E. Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola serving as the National Secretary,” Obi wrote.

“This decision was not made lightly. It comes from deep reflection on where we are as a country and what must be done to move forward,” he added.

The coalition includes several high-profile political figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. The group officially unveiled its adoption of the ADC during a gathering in Abuja on Tuesday.

Obi emphasized the coalition’s shared commitment to delivering competent, compassionate, and people-focused leadership in 2027.

“Our commitment is to sacrifice and work together towards the 2027 General Elections, ensuring that Nigeria gets a competent, capable, and compassionate leadership that will prioritise the nation’s future by putting the welfare of Nigerians first,” he said.

The former Labour Party presidential candidate, who has pledged to serve a single term if elected, noted that Nigeria’s path to progress requires unity and collaboration across political divides.

“To dismantle the structures that keep our people in poverty and insecurity, we must build bridges, not walls — even when those bridges are uneasy,” Obi stated.

The unveiling of the ADC as the coalition’s political platform marks a significant development in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape as opposition forces seek to challenge the dominance of the ruling party in 2027.
