Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has released what he claims is documentary evidence proving his role in the selection of Peter Obi as running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the 2019 presidential election.
In a statement shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, Omokri published a screenshot of an email allegedly sent to him by Peter Obi on October 8, 2018, at 6:13 PM. According to Omokri, this correspondence was part of the process that led to Obi’s eventual announcement as Atiku’s vice-presidential candidate just four days later, on October 12, 2018.
Omokri explained that the release of the email was prompted by accusations from a supporter of Obi—referred to as a “Peter Obi surrogate”—who allegedly called him a liar on a podcast. In response, he said he felt compelled to defend his credibility with what he called “documentary evidence.”
“My ONLY motive in publishing this evidence is to establish that I did not lie,” Omokri wrote. “If this email is fake or AI-generated, then I challenge Mr. Obi to deny it, and I will publish even more damning evidence, although it is not my desire to do so.”
He added that he would have preferred not to make the email public, but he considers himself “a meticulous record keeper” and insisted that all his claims can be backed up with facts.
As of the time of this report, Peter Obi and his political support base, the Obidient Movement, have yet to issue an official response to Omokri’s latest revelation.
Omokri had previously asserted that he was part of the team that helped “package” Peter Obi as Atiku’s running mate in the lead-up to the 2019 election.
Despite the Atiku-Obi ticket, the 2019 presidential election was won by then-incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari, who secured re-election for a second term.
The development has stirred renewed debate online, especially among supporters of both political figures, as speculations continue over potential alignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
