2027: Kenneth Okonkwo Tells Tinubu to Resign, Says Nigeria’s Security Crisis Has Worsened

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has called on President Bola Tinubu to resign from office rather than seek re-election in the 2027 general elections, citing what he described as the administration’s poor performance, particularly in the area of security.

Okonkwo made the call on Friday during an appearance on Channels Television’s *Sunrise Daily*, where he reacted to the recent Abuja Federal High Court judgment that had deregistered the ADC before it was later overturned.

According to him, the court ruling appeared to be part of a broader effort to weaken opposition parties ahead of the next presidential election.

“Everything about this judgment is geared towards frustrating the opposition and trying to coronate Tinubu, not elect him in 2027,” Okonkwo said.

He argued that the worsening security situation across the country had undermined the government’s credibility, pointing to recurring attacks in states such as Plateau State, Benue State, and Oyo State.

“When you want to give an example of insecurity, you don’t need to refer to yesterday because it is a daily occurrence,” he said, alleging that communities were being attacked and lives lost on a regular basis.

Okonkwo stressed that government should be judged by its ability to prevent such tragedies rather than respond after lives have been lost.

To illustrate the human cost of insecurity, the former presidential spokesperson recounted a personal experience involving one of his employees. He claimed that the worker’s mother was kidnapped in Kaduna State and that the abductors demanded a ransom running into hundreds of millions of naira.

According to him, when the family was unable to meet the demand, the kidnappers allegedly broke two of the woman’s fingers.

“These things are not even reported,” he said, adding that the suffering experienced by victims and their families often goes beyond what is reflected in public reports.

Okonkwo concluded by urging the president to step down voluntarily, saying, “Tinubu should not even allow the election to hold; he should resign and go in peace.”
