President Bola Tinubu has taken a swipe at former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, accusing him of leaving behind unresolved pension liabilities after overseeing the privatization of government-owned enterprises.
Speaking during a meeting with members of the Nigerian Diaspora Medical Association and Northeast stakeholders advocating the renomination of Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu said his administration is working to fix problems inherited from previous governments.
The President alleged that while Atiku championed the privatization of public investments during his time in office, pension obligations to workers were neglected.
“Somebody among my prospective opponents privatized government investment in public entities but forgot to pay the pension. I’m clearing the pensioners now, so clearing the mess they created,” Tinubu said.
Tinubu also called for greater national unity in tackling security challenges, particularly terrorism and banditry in the Northeast, stressing that collaboration remains key to restoring peace and stability.
Reflecting on his professional experience in the United States, the President said he chose to return home after his training in accountancy and finance to contribute to Nigeria’s development.
He maintained that stabilizing the economy remains one of his administration’s top priorities, noting that Nigerians are seeking economic stability and improved social welfare.
The President’s remarks come amid growing political exchanges ahead of the 2027 general election, with opposition figures intensifying criticism of his administration’s policies and performance.
