Stampede at Benin Children’s Day Event Leaves Students Injured, Government Orders Probe

The Edo State Government has launched an investigation into a stampede that occurred on Wednesday at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City during this year’s Children’s Day celebration, leaving several students injured.

According to a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Dr. Patrick Ebojele, the incident is now under police investigation, while a bouncer allegedly involved in the situation is being interrogated to determine the immediate and remote causes of the disturbance.

Preliminary accounts from the state government attributed the chaos to overcrowding and unruly conduct by some excited children at one of the stadium gates, which reportedly triggered panic among attendees.

Ebojele explained that the situation escalated into what he described as a “stampede,” prompting security personnel, including a bouncer, to deploy tear gas in an attempt to restore order and disperse the crowd.

He noted that the stadium was filled with thousands of pupils and students who turned out in large numbers for the celebration, describing the attendance as unprecedented. He also stated that all entry points were opened to allow access to the venue.

“In the course of the pandemonium, a few students sustained injuries,” he said, adding that the state Deputy Governor, Dennis Idahosa, who was present at the venue, immediately responded by assisting affected children and ensuring they received first aid.

According to him, those requiring further medical attention were taken to the Edo Specialist Hospital, treated, and later discharged to reunite with their families.

The government commended the swift response of security operatives, medical personnel, and volunteers, noting that their intervention helped to quickly restore calm and prevent further escalation.

Ebojele reiterated the administration’s commitment to child safety and welfare, describing the incident as isolated and not reflective of the government’s broader efforts in education and youth development.

He further urged members of the public and social media users to avoid spreading unverified reports that could heighten tension or cause unnecessary panic in the state.
