Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has called for the establishment of a new national security framework to better protect students across Nigeria as schools prepare to resume after the summer break.
His appeal follows the release of pupils and teachers abducted from Orire, Oyo State, who regained their freedom after spending 50 days in captivity.
In a post on X, Sani commended the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, alongside the military, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and other security agencies for their roles in securing the victims’ release.
“It’s relieving to learn that the abducted Oyo pupils have been released. Kudos to the NSA Ribadu, the military, DSS, the NPF and all those whose efforts led to this success,” Sani wrote.
He stressed that while the rescue operation was commendable, it also underscored the urgent need to strengthen security around educational institutions nationwide.
“As schools wind up for the summer vacation, a new national schools security framework is needed to protect students when they return,” he added.
The release of the abducted pupils and teachers was announced on Friday by the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
“Finally, the kidnapped pupils and teachers in Orire, Oyo, have been freed by their abductors,” Onanuga wrote in a post on X.
The victims had been held captive for 50 days, with their release bringing relief to their families and the wider community. The circumstances surrounding their freedom have not yet been officially disclosed.
