New Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has thrown his full support behind Cristiano Ronaldo, declaring that the veteran forward will remain part of the national team as long as he is fit and available for selection.
Speaking during his official unveiling on Friday, the 71-year-old manager dismissed suggestions that Ronaldo could become a distraction, insisting the five-time Ballon d’Or winner remains an irreplaceable figure in Portuguese football.
“As long as he’s playing and is in a condition to be selected, I will pick him, within certain limits and under the conditions that I consider best for the national team,” Jesus said.
The former Al-Nassr coach revealed he has yet to speak with Ronaldo about his international future but confirmed the two will hold discussions soon.
“I haven’t spoken with Cris yet. Cris is never going to be a problem for the national team—not for the national team, nor for me,” he said.
Describing Ronaldo as a national icon, Jesus praised the 41-year-old’s contribution to Portugal over the years.
“Cris is a symbol of Portuguese football. He’s a symbol of the national team and will forever be in the history books. I had great pleasure working with him this past year. He’s easy to work with.”
Jesus managed Ronaldo at Saudi Pro League champions Al-Nassr before leaving the club in May after guiding them to the league title. He also disclosed that Ronaldo has repeatedly expressed his desire to finish his club career in Saudi Arabia.
“He always told me, ‘I’m going to end my career at Al-Nassr.'”
Ronaldo faced criticism following Portugal’s Round of 16 exit to Spain at the 2026 FIFA World Cup under former coach Roberto Martinez. After the tournament, the veteran forward suggested it would be his final World Cup appearance but stopped short of confirming whether he would continue representing Portugal.
Jesus, who has signed a contract running through the 2030 FIFA World Cup—which Portugal will co-host alongside Spain and Morocco—said the decision ultimately rests with Ronaldo, but made it clear the door to the national team remains open.
