The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, says the focus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 Presidential elections should be winning and not zoning.
Wike made this statement on Tuesday morning.
Governor Wike said zoning which can be best described as an arrangement that ensures rotation of political power among ethnic blocs is a luxury that only ruling parties can afford.
He further stated that when he came on board the PDP, contesting the governorship election 2015 especially being from the same zone as his predecessor, Rotimi Amaechi, people gave suggestions that he should not be given the ticket of the PDP because of the zoning arrangement in the state. Though he was allowed to run out of necessity.
Governor Wike explained further that being an opposition party, all the variables are being looked at and what makes them win the election becomes paramount. He also pointed out that for the ruling party it can be called “zoning” but for the opposition party, it is called “variables”.
Wike stated that his position on the raging zoning debate is dependent on the opposition parties variables. He also stressed that the primary aim is winning the election and getting back into power.
