The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called for stronger cooperation between Nigeria and Canada, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, education and democratic development.
Obi made the call following a visit to the Canadian High Commission in Nigeria, where he said he held discussions with officials on issues affecting both countries.
In a statement shared on his verified X account on Tuesday, the former Anambra State governor said the meeting also focused on Nigeria’s forthcoming elections and Canada’s continued support for strengthening the country’s democratic institutions.
“At the invitation of the Canadian High Commission in Nigeria, I had the privilege of meeting with the head of the commission and his team,” Obi said.
He said he reiterated his belief that a “well-governed, peaceful, stable, and prosperous Nigeria” would be in Canada’s strategic interest.
According to Obi, a better-functioning Nigeria would unlock the country’s economic potential while creating opportunities for deeper partnerships between Nigeria, Canada and the wider African continent.
The NDC candidate also highlighted the need for affirmative measures to improve women’s participation and representation in politics.
He said the discussions addressed the importance of strengthening democratic institutions, increasing citizen participation and creating a political system where Nigerians, regardless of gender or background, have meaningful opportunities to participate in governance.
Obi expressed optimism about continued engagement with Canada’s diplomatic and business communities, saying such partnerships could contribute to building a more prosperous, secure and inclusive Nigeria.
