Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has charged the newly inaugurated chairmen of the state’s 13 local government areas to strengthen the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and take a firm stance against opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Nwifuru gave the directive on Tuesday at the Christian Ecumenical Centre in Abakaliki, the state capital, while addressing the newly sworn-in council chairmen.
The governor urged the officials to prioritise effective administration, development and the welfare of residents in their respective local government areas.
He warned that his administration would closely monitor their performance and would not hesitate to sanction or remove any chairman who failed to meet expectations.
Speaking on the political activities ahead of the 2027 elections, Nwifuru urged the chairmen to work towards consolidating the APC’s presence across the state.
He issued a particularly strong warning on their approach to opposition parties, saying, “Let me sound it this way, and I want to see it on the pages of newspapers tomorrow: deal with opposition parties mercilessly.”
The governor also cautioned the council chairmen against becoming complacent because of their positions, stressing that they were expected to justify the confidence placed in them by the people and the government.
Nwifuru further indicated that decisive action could be taken against underperforming officials, particularly as he seeks a second term in office.
The directive has placed renewed focus on the dual role of the newly inaugurated council chairmen as administrators and key political actors in their respective local government areas ahead of the 2027 general elections.
