A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has said his decision to join former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s camp was based on leadership conviction, insisting that it was Peter Obi who betrayed him—not the other way around.
Okonkwo made the remarks on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, barely 24 hours after Atiku appointed him as his spokesperson.
The Nollywood actor-turned-politician recalled that he publicly severed ties with Obi in 2024 after concluding that the former Anambra State governor lacked the decisiveness needed to lead Nigeria.
“As a public affairs analyst that I have been since 2009, before I ever met Peter Obi, I continued with my job. I said in July 2024 that I was no longer speaking for him because he is not decisive,” Okonkwo said.
He maintained that his assessment of Obi was based on what he observed during their political relationship.
“I’ve seen in him certain qualities that make him unfit to be the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I made it public. By then, I had finished my job with him. To let Nigerians know I was no longer speaking for him, I made it public and went my own way,” he added.
Rejecting suggestions that he abandoned Obi, Okonkwo said, “He was the one who betrayed me.”
His comments come amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election, following his recent appointment as spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar.
