Osun Guber Poll: Accord Alleges Assassination Attempt on LG Chairman, Demands DSS, Police Probe

The Accord Party has condemned what it described as an assassination attempt on its Osogbo Local Government Area Chairman, Mr. Asimiyu Ajibola, alleging that the attack was politically motivated.

The party has called on the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) to launch a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

Mr. Ajibola reportedly sustained gunshot injuries on the night of June 3, 2026, when armed men attacked a Toyota Corolla conveying him and his associates in the MDS area of Osogbo, Osun State.

According to the party, two gunmen opened fire on the vehicle, leaving the chairman critically injured. He was subsequently rushed to the University Teaching Hospital in Osun State, where doctors are battling to save his life.

In a statement issued by its National Chairman, Barrister Maxwell Mgbudem, Accord described the attack as “outrageous, barbaric, despicable and wicked,” particularly as preparations intensify for the August 12, 2026 governorship election in the state.

The party expressed gratitude to God for preserving the life of its chairman and prayed for his speedy recovery.

Accord further alleged that its members had repeatedly been subjected to political violence in recent months, claiming that party supporters, campaign structures and public property had come under attack.

“Thugs associated with the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state have severally attacked Accord, Imole Campaign structures and public properties, including billboards and party secretariats, in attempts to harass, intimidate and suppress our members,” the statement said.

The party also accused security agencies of failing to act despite prior warnings about alleged plots to disrupt its activities.

“Sadly, security agencies were notified of these plots with a view to averting them, yet they were executed under their watch, and nobody has been prosecuted for these heinous crimes,” the statement added.

Calling for an end to political violence, Accord maintained that democratic processes should prevail over intimidation and force.

“Enough is enough of this political violence. It is obvious that the ballot is stronger than the gun,” the party stated.

Reaffirming its commitment to peaceful and issue-based campaigning ahead of the governorship election, Accord insisted that it would not be intimidated by what it termed anti-democratic forces in the state.

The party also expressed confidence in the re-election prospects of Governor Ademola Adeleke, describing him as a leader who has delivered democratic dividends and transformed the state.

“Together, Osun State will be taken to a new level of development and prosperity,” the statement concluded.
