2027 Elections: FG Warns Political Parties, Vows to Prosecute Anyone Who Leaks Nigerians’ Data

The Federal Government has warned that anyone found unlawfully disclosing or mishandling the personal data of Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections will face prosecution.

The warning was issued by the National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Vincent Olatunji, during an interview on Channels Television on Saturday.

Olatunji said the commission is stepping up efforts to monitor how political parties, institutions, and other stakeholders collect, store, and process citizens’ personal information as preparations for the 2027 elections gradually gather pace.

According to him, the increasing collection of voter-related data by political parties has heightened concerns over privacy and the security of sensitive personal information.

He stressed that many political organisations lack adequate data protection measures despite handling large volumes of personal data.

“They are collecting data of their party members. What kind of privacy safeguards, what kind of guardrails have they put in place? They don’t even know. That’s the truth,” Olatunji said.

He warned that the NDPC would not hesitate to enforce the law against any individual or organisation found compromising citizens’ personal information.

“Anyone found revealing people’s data will be prosecuted,” he stated.

The commission’s warning comes amid growing concerns over data privacy and the protection of voter information as Nigeria begins preparations for the 2027 general elections.
