Nigerian political figures Peter Obi and Bayo Onanuga have congratulated Spain national football team following their 1-0 victory over Argentina national football team in the FIFA World Cup final on Sunday.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate and President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy shared their reactions in separate posts on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Spain dominated the final for much of the match and eventually secured the winning goal in the second half of extra time. Ferran Torres converted a knockdown from Nico Williams to seal victory for La Roja and claim their second FIFA World Cup title.
Reacting to the result, Obi described the tournament’s conclusion as a “gallant finish” and a fitting birthday gift. He said the competition demonstrated the potential of young people when given the opportunity to excel.
“The FIFA World Cup concluded successfully today, with the best team emerging victorious. This is yet another fitting birthday gift, further demonstrating that the youth have not only arrived but are proving that excellence, when given the opportunity, will always prevail,” Obi wrote.
He added that the performance of the players reflected “competence, capacity, character, and capability,” and urged Nigeria to replicate such values across various sectors of national life.
“This is the spirit we must replicate across every sector of our national life. A New Nigeria is Possible, and it must be reflected in every endeavour that brings pride, progress, and honour to our nation,” he stated.
Onanuga also praised Spain’s performance, describing the victory as richly deserved. He said the Spanish side outclassed and overwhelmed Argentina throughout the encounter.
“Congratulations to Spain. Yours is a FIFA World Cup victory richly deserved. You completely outclassed and overwhelmed the defending champions, Argentina. The statistics clearly indicated that you are the true champions,” Onanuga wrote.
Spain’s triumph capped a dominant tournament campaign and reinforced their status as one of world football’s leading teams.
