OAU Students Stage Peaceful Protest Over Welfare, Academic Challenges

Students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, on Tuesday took to the streets in a peaceful protest, demanding urgent intervention over lingering welfare and academic issues affecting the campus community.

The demonstration, organised by the Students’ Union, began in the early hours of the day, with a large number of students marching and chanting around the institution’s main gate. Protesters were seen carrying placards and moving in coordinated groups, maintaining order throughout the exercise.

The action followed a resolution reached during a congress held on Monday at Awo Café, where union members unanimously approved the protest in response to persistent concerns.

In a joint statement signed by the Students’ Union President, Adelani David, and General Secretary, Habeeb Oke Isa, the leadership emphasised its commitment to non-violence.

“The Students’ Union staged a peaceful demonstration on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at 6 a.m., with the intention to block major roads and gates leading to the campus until our demands are met,” the statement read.

It added that the protest was conducted in line with the long-standing tradition of OAU students for orderly and non-violent demonstrations.

Students were also urged to participate responsibly, with the union stressing the need for discipline while expressing grievances.

The protest comes amid growing dissatisfaction over transportation challenges, accommodation concerns, and delays associated with the institution’s e-portal upgrade. Many students have reportedly been unable to register courses or access academic results weeks into the semester.

In a separate statement issued on April 25, the union also rejected plans to evacuate students from Awolowo Hall Blocks 7 and 8 for renovation, describing the move as ill-timed and lacking adequate planning.

“The Union categorically rejects the implementation of such an evacuation without proper notice, sufficient planning, or the provision of alternative accommodation for affected students,” the statement noted.

The Students’ Union reiterated its commitment to peaceful engagement but warned that urgent intervention by the university management is necessary to address the concerns and restore normal academic activities on campus.
