‘Northerners Will Never Vote for Peter Obi,’ Ali Modu Sheriff Declares, Backs Tinubu’s Re-election Until 2031

Former Borno State Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, has declared that President Bola Tinubu should be allowed to complete two terms in office, insisting that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar should defer his presidential ambition until 2031.

Sheriff made the remarks during an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television on Monday, where he argued that the North would not support the presidential bid of Peter Obi, who he claimed is the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), with Rabiu Kwankwaso as his running mate.

According to Sheriff, Northern voters have not forgotten what he described as Obi’s treatment of Northerners during his tenure as governor of Anambra State.

“I don’t worry about Peter Obi because I know Northerners will never support him,” Sheriff said.

“The situation is different now. During Peter Obi’s time as governor, he worked to get Northerners to leave Anambra State. This is what people in Kano are telling Kwankwaso now.

“They say they have always stood by him and will continue to support him if he contests for president, but they will not back him if he aligns with Peter Obi.”

Speaking on Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ambition, Sheriff acknowledged the former vice president’s credentials but maintained that power should remain in the South until 2031.

“For Atiku, this is not the North’s turn. He is a respected leader and eminently qualified, but he has to wait until 2031. President Buhari completed eight years in office, so it is now the South’s turn,” he said.
