The suspended Rivers State House of Assembly has expressed support for the declaration of a state of emergency in the state, which led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, and the assembly itself by President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, Speaker Martin Amaewhule attributed the declaration to Governor Fubara’s alleged refusal to implement a Supreme Court judgment.
“The condition of our dear Rivers State today is mainly because of the malfeasance of the governor, who has serially disobeyed court judgments and orders, failed to govern in line with his oath of office and the Constitution,” the statement read.
Amaewhule accused the governor of adopting a “despotic and tyrannical” approach, obstructing the functioning of the legislature, and undermining the principles of democratic governance.
The speaker assured constituents that the assembly would comply with the emergency measures and endorsed the appointment of a Sole Administrator, describing it as a step taken in the best interest of the state.
“As an Assembly, we assure you all that we will abide by this declaration, even though it is not what we prayed for. Mr. President has acted in the best interest of the country. Therefore, we urge everyone to remain calm and support the Sole Administrator as he assumes duty,” Amaewhule stated.
He further called on Rivers residents to support the new leadership, assuring them that the Assembly would provide the necessary backing to ensure stability during the period of emergency.
