A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Kassim Afegbua, has called for the Southern region of Nigeria to be allowed to complete its eight-year tenure in power before the presidency rotates back to the North.
Speaking on Arise TV, Afegbua criticized the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for disregarding its constitutional provision on power rotation during the 2023 elections by fielding Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as its presidential candidate.
Highlighting Article 7, Section C, of the PDP’s constitution, which mandates power rotation, Afegbua accused the party of abandoning its principles in favor of Atiku, causing political instability.
“For me, I don’t think the North should bother discussing 2027 for power to be ceded to them,” Afegbua said, emphasizing that the South should be allowed to serve a full eight-year term before power shifts.
His statement aligns with recent remarks by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, who urged Northern politicians to step aside for President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
Meanwhile, Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, dismissed Akume’s comments, arguing that Tinubu has yet to deliver sufficiently to secure reelection in 2027.
