The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship election.
The endorsement followed a closed-door meeting held at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat formally declared his intention to contest the state’s top office before members of the State Executive Council and key party stakeholders.
Among those in attendance were members of the Governor’s Advisory Council, including former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, and party chieftain Ganiyu Solomon, alongside other influential figures within the ruling party structure.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu described the endorsement as a unanimous decision by stakeholders, emphasizing Hamzat’s preparedness and deep understanding of the state’s governance architecture.
“We received the Deputy Governor, who came with a strong delegation of leaders to formally notify us of his intention to run for the governorship. It was a unanimous decision that he is fit and well-prepared for the role. He understands the system thoroughly,” the governor said.
Sanwo-Olu also acknowledged the role of Bola Tinubu in shaping both his political journey and that of his deputy, noting that the President played a significant part in fostering their working relationship.
The endorsement is expected to significantly influence the political landscape ahead of the 2027 election, as succession discussions gradually gain momentum within the state’s ruling party.
