National Assembly Amended Electoral Act to Secure Tinubu’s Re-election, Says Udenta

A political analyst and founding National Secretary of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), Professor Udenta Udenta, has alleged that the National Assembly amended the Electoral Act to pave the way for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

Udenta made the claim on Thursday while speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, where he also accused the current administration of shrinking Nigeria’s democratic space and undermining opposition politics.

According to him, the Electoral Act amendment was deliberately orchestrated to favour President Tinubu’s return to office.

“The National Assembly was procured to amend the Electoral Act to get Tinubu reinstated into power,” he said.

The political analyst further alleged that since the Tinubu administration assumed office in 2023, there has been a sustained erosion of democratic institutions, citing what he described as the shrinking of civic space, attacks on labour unions, the weaponisation of the criminal justice system, and increasing pressure on opposition political parties.

He argued that the country is gradually drifting towards authoritarianism.

“The shrinking civic space, the brutal assault on labour centres, the weaponisation of the criminal justice system through lawfare, and the war declared on political parties point to a regime that is tiptoeing into totalitarianism,” Udenta stated.

Udenta also questioned the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alleging that the electoral body prevented political parties from conducting primary elections on May 30.

“How come the same INEC under Tinubu stopped primaries on May 30? Because they didn’t even think opposition parties would succeed at their primaries,” he alleged.

His remarks come amid growing political debates over electoral reforms, the independence of INEC, and preparations for the 2027 general elections.
