The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called for the death penalty to be imposed on individuals convicted of terrorism in Nigeria, insisting that those found guilty of active involvement in terror attacks should be executed within seven days of their conviction.
The group’s Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, made the demand in a statement issued on Wednesday, urging the Federal Government to put in place the necessary legal framework to enforce the measure.
The call follows the sentencing of two convicted terrorists, Abubakar Abba and Mahmud Usman, who were handed life imprisonment by Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday.
Reacting to the judgment, Akintola described the life sentences as too lenient, arguing that convicted terrorists should face capital punishment instead.
According to him, terrorists are “hardened and merciless criminals” whose continued detention poses a significant security risk. He warned that allowing convicted terrorists to remain in correctional facilities could create opportunities for them to influence other inmates or coordinate further attacks.
“We therefore demand the death penalty for any terrorist found guilty of active participation in terror attacks,” Akintola said.
He further urged that any terrorist sentenced to death should be executed within seven days of the judgment, citing concerns over the possibility of convicted terrorists planning attacks while in custody.
MURIC also called on the Federal Government to take the necessary legislative and legal steps to ensure the implementation of the proposed policy.
