The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called on governors in the South-West region to urgently strengthen and empower local security outfits, including the Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun), the O’odua Peoples Congress (OPC), and other community-based security groups, to combat the rising wave of kidnappings and violent crimes across the region.
The call was made by MURIC’s Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, in a statement issued on Friday.
The appeal comes amid growing concerns over insecurity in the South-West, which has witnessed a series of kidnapping incidents and other criminal activities in recent weeks.
The latest incident involved the abduction of 39 students and seven teachers from communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, further heightening fears among residents.
Akintola urged state governments in the region to take proactive measures by equipping and expanding local security networks before the situation deteriorates further.
According to him, community-based security groups should serve as first responders in addressing emerging security threats.
“MURIC advises South-West governments to prepare vigilante groups as first responders. Groups like the O’odua Peoples Congress (OPC) and Iru Ekun should be empowered in order to halt the advance of bandits,” he stated.
He also advocated for increased recruitment into the Amotekun Corps to enhance its operational effectiveness and improve security coverage across the region.
The MURIC leader further encouraged residents to resist intimidation by criminal elements and support efforts aimed at protecting lives and property.
Addressing members of the Muslim community, Akintola cited Qur’anic teachings on courage and resilience in the face of threats, while also calling on Christians in the region to adopt a united stance against criminality.
He stressed the need for stronger collaboration between government authorities, security agencies, and local communities to curb the activities of kidnappers and other violent criminals.
MURIC maintained that decisive action and improved support for local security structures are essential to restoring safety and public confidence across the South-West.
