The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to deepen its collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) by adopting the National Identification Number (NIN) as a key tool for voter verification and the elimination of duplicate registrations ahead of future elections.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, made the announcement on Wednesday while receiving the Director-General of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, and members of her management team during a courtesy visit to the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Amupitan said the renewed partnership follows the enactment of the National Identity Management Commission Act, 2026, which provides a stronger legal framework for collaboration between both agencies.
He disclosed that INEC’s newly introduced online Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) platform already requires applicants to submit their National Identification Number for identity verification.
According to him, integrating INEC’s voter registration system more closely with NIMC’s identity database will simplify the registration process, improve data verification, and enhance the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system.
“The Commission sees enormous opportunities for collaboration with NIMC, particularly in voter registration, data verification, and the elimination of duplicate voter records,” Amupitan said.
The INEC chairman expressed confidence that the partnership would strengthen the integrity of the nation’s voter register and promote a more transparent and credible electoral process in future elections.
