Illegal IPTV Operator Jailed Over £200,000 Premier League Streaming Fraud

A Swansea Crown Court has sentenced Michael Barrow, operator of the illegal IPTV service “MB Streams,” to three years and two months in prison after he pleaded guilty to three offences under the Fraud Act.

Barrow admitted running a large-scale illegal streaming network that provided unauthorized access to Premier League matches and other premium television content. The operation served nearly 2,000 customers and generated more than £200,000 in illicit profits through subscription sales and pre-loaded Amazon Fire TV sticks.

The court heard that Barrow initially promoted the service openly on Facebook before changing his methods after receiving a cease-and-desist notice. He later adopted a referral-only model, restricting sales to trusted customers and requiring many payments to be made in cash at his residence. For online transactions, customers were reportedly instructed to disguise payments as purchases of retro football shirts in an effort to evade detection.

During sentencing, the judge described the scheme as “a large-scale, highly sophisticated and prolonged commercial fraud,” noting that Barrow’s decision to continue operating despite receiving a formal warning significantly aggravated the offence.

The prosecution was led by the Premier League, with support from the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT) and the TARIAN Regional Organised Crime Unit’s Economic Crime Team in southern Wales.

Reacting to the verdict, Premier League Director of Legal Enforcement Stefan Sergot said the sentence underscores the serious consequences facing individuals involved in illegal streaming services. He added that such operations not only violate intellectual property rights but can also expose consumers to fraud, malware and identity theft.

FACT Chairman Kieron Sharp described the operation as a deliberate and sustained criminal enterprise, stressing that illegal streaming harms broadcasters, rights holders, content creators and legitimate service providers while exposing users to significant security risks.

Emma Brown, Regional Fraud Development Officer at TARIAN, expressed disappointment that Barrow continued his activities despite being formally warned in 2021. She reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to working with partners to combat financial crime and intellectual property theft across southern Wales.

The case marks another significant victory in ongoing efforts by authorities and rights holders to crack down on illegal IPTV services and protect broadcast rights.
