Funding Delays Risk Undermining Military Gains Against Insurgency — Reps Spokesperson Warns

The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, has cautioned that delays in the release of approved defence funds could jeopardize recent progress recorded in Nigeria’s fight against insurgency.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Sunday, Agbese linked the military’s recent operational successes to improved coordination within the Armed Forces but stressed that sustaining the current momentum would depend largely on timely financial support.

He noted that troops are operating under intense pressure across multiple conflict zones, emphasizing that consistent funding remains a critical factor in determining the outcome of ongoing operations.

“Our military is doing an extraordinary job under very demanding conditions. However, no matter how committed and professional our troops are, operations of this scale require steady funding, timely releases, and access to modern equipment,” he said.

Agbese commended the Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, and the Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, describing their leadership as strategic and deliberate in tackling evolving security threats.

According to him, intensified offensives and improved coordination among military formations in recent months signal a shift in operational strategy, resulting in enhanced response capabilities and improved troop morale.

“What we are seeing is a leadership that understands the complexity of modern warfare. There is clearer coordination, improved morale, and a stronger resolve to confront these threats directly,” he added.

He further pointed to reported gains by troops, including the dismantling of insurgent networks, disruption of supply chains, and the reclamation of previously contested territories. However, he warned that such achievements could be reversed without sustained logistical and financial backing.

“Appropriations alone are not enough. What matters is the speed and consistency of releases. Delays can slow down operations, weaken logistics, and create openings for criminal elements,” Agbese stated.

The lawmaker called on relevant government institutions responsible for disbursing defence funds to act with urgency, describing military financing as essential to national stability.

He also urged Nigerians to support ongoing security operations by cooperating with security agencies and providing credible information, noting that public participation is crucial to long-term success.

“Our troops are making daily sacrifices to keep the country safe. Supporting them goes beyond words; it requires cooperation and trust,” he said.

Agbese emphasized that stronger collaboration between the military, other security agencies, state authorities, and local communities would be vital in addressing the root causes of insecurity.

He expressed optimism that with improved funding, institutional support, and sustained leadership, Nigeria could consolidate recent gains and move closer to restoring lasting stability.

“This is a fight we can win. With the right support and a united effort, a turning point is possible,” he concluded.
