Aloy Ejimakor, legal counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to order the unconditional release of Igbo youths allegedly detained across Nigeria without trial.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Ejimakor raised concerns over what he described as the continued detention of “thousands of Igbo youths” suspected of affiliation with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
He argued that prolonged detention without due process undermines the principles of justice and the rule of law, insisting that those in custody deserve either to be formally charged in court or released.
“All people of conscience should urge President Tinubu to direct the unconditional release of the thousands of IGBO youths detained without trial across Nigeria on mere suspicion of IPOB affiliation,” Ejimakor stated.
His comments come amid ongoing debates surrounding security operations in Nigeria’s South-East, where allegations of arbitrary arrests linked to IPOB activities have persisted.
While the Federal Government has previously listed IPOB among entities associated with terrorism financing, Ejimakor challenged the designation, maintaining that due process must be upheld regardless of such classifications.
The call adds to growing discourse on human rights, national security, and the balance between law enforcement and civil liberties in Nigeria.
